Need suggestions for where to make the best #GivingTuesday donations to the environment? Here are five worthy charities I support that I hope you will, too. And by the way, they accept donations any time of the year, not just on #GivingTuesday!
Women’s Voices for the Earth – This Montana-based non-profit “amplifies women’s voices to eliminate the toxic chemicals that harm our health and communities.” The group works for a world where “the earth is taken care of, workers are paid well and treated fairly, and there are no toxic chemicals in our homes, our communities, or our environment.” They are helping get the nasty stuff out of cleaning products, intimate care and personal care products, make-up, disinfectants, and more.
Mom’s Clean Air Force – I’ve been working with Moms Clean Air Force for almost a decade, so I know first hand how effective they are at educating and mobilizing moms to help stop climate change, stick up for clean air, and create a toxic-free future. They marshall the strength of the 1,000,000+ moms (and dads) who support them to press lawmakers on Capitol Hill to protect our kids’ health. They have a vibrant network of state-based community organizers so they can work locally–and on both sides of the political aisle. They focus the spotlight on industrial pollution and promote environmental justice in all communities. Support “The Force” – and make a difference!
Plastic Pollution Coalition – The Plastic Pollution Coalition is a growing global alliance of more than 1,200 organizations, businesses, and thought leaders in 75 countries working to stop plastic pollution and halt plastic’s toxic impact on people, wildlife, our waterways and oceans, and the environment. It’s a major proponents of the #BreakFreeFromPlasticPollution Act, which will help address the fact that the U.S. produces the most plastic waste per capita of any country–91% of which is never recycled.
The Jane Goodall Institute – Dr. Jane Goodall founded the Jane Goodall Institute to protect chimpanzees and inspire people to conserve the natural world we all share. In doing so, “We improve the lives of people, animals and the environment.” “Everything is connected,” the Institute declares on its website, and “everyone can make a difference.” Dr. Goodall–scientist, climate activist, conservationist, educator–is the embodiment of that belief. The Institute is fighting to stop wildlife trafficking and illegal animal trade, restore wildlife habitats, provide scholarships for girls education, educate young people in over 100 countries, and much more.
Environmental Voter Project – The Environmental Voter Project knows that unless we elect environmental champions to local and national office, we’ll never protect the planet and our health. To that end, EVP has come up with the brilliant idea of identifying inactive environmentalists who don’t vote and motivating them to cast their ballots. In this era of extremely divisive politics and attempts to deprive people of their voting rights, EVP makes a difference. In over five years, EVP has helped convert 730,000 infrequent voters into consistent “super voters” who reliable vote in federal, state and local elections.
